Doc Magilligan's Irish Pub & Restaurant Named in Top 10 List of Best Irish Pubs in North America

Doc Magilligan’s Restaurant & Irish Pub in Niagara Falls has been named one of the top 10 Irish pubs in North America by the Irish Pubs Global Federation, which acts to connect Irish Pubs around the world.

Irish Pubs Global’s annual awards gala takes place on Oct. 10 in Dublin, Ireland, where the owners and staff of Doc’s will find out if they have been awarded the top spot for 2017.

“It’s a team effort. Our staff has worked very hard to make Doc’s a place to enjoy true Irish hospitality,” said Maureen Magilligan Cade, owner of Doc’s.

“We are thrilled to have this nomination.”

According to its website, the federation’s mission is to create, connect and support a global community of Irish hospitality business owners, managers and their suppliers to help ensure their continued success.

Located adjacent to the Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel on Lundy’s Lane, Doc’s was designed with Ireland’s finest pubs in mind, with all of its pieces crafted in Ireland and shipped across the Atlantic prior to its opening in 2014.

Along with authentic Irish decor, the pub features a range of traditional Irish comfort food including shepherd’s pie, madras chicken curry and stuffed Boxty potato pancakes.

Executive chef Gary Beynon adds modern and unique pub-inspired items such as Reuben bites, Buffalo chicken wing chowder and an Irish perogy.

“Food is our passion and great pub food should be scratch made,” he said.

“We take great pride in preparing our menus that change seasonally using local ingredients and heritage recipes.”

Lisa Smith, director of marketing and sales, said the business received notification on Aug. 2 that it was shortlisted.

“They’re saying that a total of 16,000 public nominations were received over a three-week period, and then it progressed to the judging stage,” said Smith.

“We needed to fill out an entry form, and … they judge us on our social media, our Trip Advisor scores, a lot of submitted photos and menus and videos, and testimonials and all that.”

The recognition is an example, said Smith, of how successful the location’s transition from an older, 40-year-old bar to Doc’s has been.

“The owners, Len and Fred Cade, had decided that they really needed to really make an impact, so that there would be a significant change to the lounge,” she said.

In addition to being one of the finalists for Irish pub of the year, Doc’s was named in five other categories, including best craft beer experience, best food experience, best cocktail experience, best chef and best marketing campaign.
